Paddle On

A busy week and I’m excited for a Friday afternoon escape to the lake with my daughter.

We load our kayaks and drive north a short distance.

We unload the kayaks along the shore and grab the waterproof bag.

In goes the water bottles, tissues and snacks.

I grab the sunscreen, then toss it back in the car.

What sun? It’s not even that warm.

We won’t be here long, maybe an hour to just relax.

You can plan the day, but you can’t control the weather.

It’s overcast and dreary.

Yet we’re committed and into the lake we go.

We paddle. We float. We talk. We dip our toes in the water.

Time passes as we move forward along the shoreline.

The sun begins to fight its way through the clouds.

A glimpse at first, and then the sun wins.

The clouds subside, the sky brightens.

We stop for a snack as we bask in the sunshine.

I should have packed the sunscreen.

I let my face soak up the sun.

It warms my skin and lifts my spirits.

Oh, it feels so good.

Maybe we’ll stay longer.

We paddle. We float. We talk. We dip our toes in the water.

The tension slowly leaves my body.

All week, I looked forward to this time on the water.

I feel like God is smiling down on me.

It has turned into a beautiful afternoon for kayaking.

We paddle onward around the lake.

We soak up the sun.

We smile and laugh.

This is good for the heart and soul.

It is such a lovely day, and we do not want to turn around.

The one-hour trip turns into hours.

We paddle. We float. We talk. We dip our toes in the water.

Late afternoon arrives, and we pull our kayaks ashore.

It is time to return home.

We heave the kayaks onto the car rack and strap them down, one by one.

Our bodies are crisp and red.

We are sunburned, yet we are happy.

Our afternoon turned out to be exactly what we needed.

We say goodbye to the lake as we pull away.

Our day was blessed with sunshine, relaxation, camaraderie.

This is why we go kayaking.

Paddle on.
